All About Kitchen Faucets
By Marcus Perchowski
Is it time to renew the look of your kitchen? A new kitchen faucet might
be just the accent piece to create an entirely new look to the kitchen! A
new faucet is a good starting point! Being the focal point of the sink,
it does catch the eye.
If you have the hard water ‘curse’, odds are it’s been recking havoc with
the guts of your kitchen faucet. Not to mention a continual
drip-drip-drip. In addition, hard water residue most likely stained your
fixture leaving you with an unattractive mess. Replacement time!
But what do you actually get when you pay mega dollars for a spanking new
kitchen faucet? Odds are all youre really getting is less money to
splurge on the rest of your kitchen upgrade. A prominent consumer reports
team performed in-depth testing on kitchen faucets to get the real scoop.
In a unanticipated turn of events, their evaluations discovered that despite
the marketing hype, faucet prices have little to do with
performance. In this instance, you dont always receive what you
paid for!
In the world of faucets for the kitchen, its the exterior finish - not
the trade name – that at the end of the day provides enduring resilience.
Go figure!
Naturally, investing additional money does make available more options to
select from. So how do you go about selecting the right kitchen
faucet? Especially when prices range from $50 all the way to $600 or
more! Lets investigate what to keep an eye out for.
For starters, lifetime warranties that cover leaks and stains is about
customary in the faucet trade. Thanks to technology, most perform the
mission of delivering water exceptionally well. Barring the budget
priced faucets sold, todays kitchen fixtures are manufactured with superior
valves and hardier finishes. So performance is not really the true test -
they all perform reasonably well. What is worthy of paying attention to
is what happens to the faucet with daily use. Just how does it stand up
to scratches, stains, bumps and bruises?
What the consumer group decided to do was perform their evaluations on the
faucet’s finish and not the make of the product. In the final analysis,
this is what youre interested in when buying a kitchen sink faucet.
Here’s a little chemistry 101. Faucet exteriors are battered with charged
metal atoms. These metal atoms chemically bond to the surface of the base
metal in a procedure called physical vapor deposition, or PVD. The issue
is that various metals affect different finishes. Even nickel and
bronze. The evaluation team revealed that faucets with PVD finishes held
their own despite earnest attempts to scratch and mar them. PVD finishes
are not bullet-proof however and strong corrosives (i.e. drain cleaner) can
lightly blemish them.
A chrome plated faucet is common in many kitchens today. Chrome is pretty
durable but can be marred with an abrasive scouring pad. If you prefer
the look of chrome, use caution when cleaning your faucet.
Also tested were the single-handled faucets which are a very popular design.
These models combine spray head and spout for further usefulness and
flexibility. But the test findings are applicable to other faucets designs as
well.
Bronze offers a distinguished look to the kitchen sink and a good option if
youre not into shiny fixtures. Selecting the correctly treated bronze is
important though. Tests proved that a faucet with PVD finish withstood
abrasion tests but the bronze without the PVD finish did not.
When youre contemplating an upgrade to your kitchen, a new faucet will provide
a whole new look to the sink and the total kitchen. Kitchen sink faucets
are relatively inexpensive (compared to other items in a kitchen
remodel!) and offer a distinct look youll enjoy for years.
